With U.S. emissions related to transportation hovering around 30 percent,22 boosting efficiencies across transportation and logistics is a critical opportunity for meeting emission reduction targets, but also for reducing operating costs. Whether a company maintains its own vehicle fleet or outsources logistics to a third-party, there should be management systems in place to monitor the environmental performance of the entire transportation network.
HOW ARE COMPANIES PERFORMING?
In The Road to 2020: Corporate Progress on The Ceres Roadmap For Sustainability, we evaluated 600 of the largest U.S. companies on their progress towards meeting the expectations laid forth in The Ceres Roadmap for Sustainability.
In this section, using data compiled and analyzed by Sustainalytics, we were able to assess the progress of five sectors--Automotive & Transportation, Food & Beverage, Footwear & Apparel, Retail and Technology Hardware--for the Transportation Management expectation.
We will be looking at additional indicators in the future to capture the meaning of the expectations more completely and will develop new indicators to capture data as it is more readily disclosed by companies.
