Increasing momentum to innovate products and services with reduced environmental and social impacts is transforming business models. This advancement is being driven in part by growing consumer demand for sustainable product offerings, but also by the increasing societal need for paradigm-changing products and solutions to key sustainability challenges.
HOW ARE COMPANIES PERFORMING?
In the The Road to 2020: Corporate Progress on The Ceres Roadmap For Sustainability, we evaluated 600 of the largest U.S. companies on their progress towards meeting the expectations laid forth in the Ceres Roadmap for Sustainability using data compiled and analyzed by Sustainalytics. Although the Roadmap has five specific expectations for Products & Services, were only able to access data for one: Sustainable Product Design.
Each industry group was evaluated based on a unique set of sector-specific metrics. For example, Food & Beverage companies and some Retail companies were evaluated on programs and targets to increase sustainable food products, while Financial Services companies were evaluated on sustainability-related financial service offerings, such as “green” financing or mortgages. Footwear & Apparel and Technology Hardware firms, which generate significant product end-of-life waste, were evaluated on their sustainable design initiatives and related R&D efforts.For this first report it was not possible to capture all of the data required to fully assess all of The Ceres Roadmap expectations. For some Ceres Roadmap expectations, companies are not yet disclosing the information needed to assess their progress and in other cases, we did not have access to the type of data needed to adequately assess corporate progress.
We will be looking at additional indicators in the future to capture the meaning of the expectations more completely and will develop new indicators to capture data as it is more readily disclosed by companies.
